FC Theater Department presents 'Sly Fox'

Fullerton College Hornet  - Kerry Stavert - Wednesday, April 25th, 2001
Andrea Paquin and Jesse Patch share a fun moment on stage.

The Fullerton College Theater Department. will push the limits of creativity for all involved in a unique theater staging of "Sly Fox."

"Sly Fox" is a take off on Ben Johnson's "Volpone," and is set in San Francisco at the turn of the century. Larry Gelbart, whom director Chuck Ketter considers "masterful with comedy," wrote the adaptation. Ketter, who has acted in a production of "Sly Fox," knew this play would provide excellent opportunities for his students to grow artistically.

The play is the story of Foxwell J. Sly who, in cahoots with his servant, asks the question, "How low will man stoop for money or power?"

The most interesting challenge of the production comes from Ketter's decision to produce the play in the "Black Box" with flexible seating and a theater in-the-round atmosphere. Scenery is minimal, so the burden of making the production believable lies within the actors.

"Sly Fox" is actually known within theater as a "farce."

"A farce traditionally has a lot of movement-anyways, but we had to use more movement. than normal to make the play interactive with the audience," Ketter said.

The multiple locations depicted in the production presented student light designer, Roxanne Rosas, with the opportunity to really display her talent. In one scene, lighting alone creates the effect' of a prison. In another, Rosas chose to highlight a deeply religious character with the illusion of church windows.

Performances will take place in the Bronwyn Dodson Theater on April 27 and 28 and- May 4 and May 5 at 8 p.m. Sunday performances on April 29 and May 6 will be at 2 pm. Tickets may be ordered by phone at (714) 992-7433.
